Playfair Font, is a serif font of transitional design from the 18th Century.
Playfair Font takes inspiration from the European Enlightenment of the 18th Century when broad nib quills were replaced by pointed steel pens as the popular writing tool of the day.
A rounded serif font, Playfair Font retains its appeal today due to its beautiful curves and well-rounded corners. Perfectly suitable for traditional and modern websites, Playfair Font is what we refer to as a display font. Display fonts are perfect for logos, website banners and headlines, however they are less powerful for body copy or small text size.
Playfair Font takes its influence from the designs of John Baskerville and from Scotch Roman designs. Playfair Font does however retain its own unique design having been born out of the developments in printing technology, ink and papermaking at the turn of the century. Playfair Font was one of the popular fonts from that time as it became possible to point letter forms of high contrast and delicate hairlines that were increasingly detached from the written letter form.
Font and Swatch like Playfair for its classical design paired with a modern feel. Playfairs curves and rounded geometry allow it to perform well on screen as well as in print. It is suitable for classical or modern websites & digital displays and even retains its appeal in italics.
Playfairs Font’s openness creates a feeling of trust and is perfect for retail fashion brands particularly those that are elegant, bold, stylish, extravagant, or elegant.
Whilst Playfair Font works well as a logo or heading font, for long stretches of body copy, the delicate, high-contrast strokes may hinder readability, especially when used at smaller font sizes. Playfair Font is best complimented by a corporate font and in this regard, we recommend any of Montserrat, Roboto or Open Sans to make the perfect partnership.
